Our School Community

The third inquiry of the organizing theme (Organizing Ourselves) focuses on the community we belong to. The children had to inquire about school community and how it function.

What is Community?

A child of 3 to 5 years old needs to understand the meaning of community he/she belongs to. They need to know that a community is a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment living in a common location. However, community does involve how people structure, how people behaves, help ,cooperate and express common values and social cohesion within a shared geographical location.

The children had the opportunity to visit the school community and get acquainted with the environment they belong to. They met other teachers, children, people at work other than teachers. They understood the need of other people at work in their community and there relationship with them.

Classification

In math we are working on classification. One of the activities that the children were engaged into was sticking after classifying the two primary colors (red-blue) construction papers.

The children used class manipulatives to learn the concept of classification. First they classified individually than they shared together their final conclusion that we can classify according to shape ,size and color.
